Kenny Pickett or Mitchell Trubisky? Mike Tomlin Comments on Steelers Quarterback Competition Ahead of Season

With the NFL season upon us, Pittsburgh Steelers fans still don’t know whether it will be rookie Kenny Pickett or Mitchell Trubisky under center for them for week 1 against the Bengals.

After Trubisky shined given the starting nod in the final preseason game over the weekend, many were expecting head coach Mike Tomlin to be quick with naming him the starter this week.

However, Tomlin still isn’t ready to name his starter.

“Mike Tomlin is not ready to name a starting quarterback,” ESPN Steelers reporter Brooke Pryor tweeted out on Tuesday morning.

While some fans took this as meaning Kenny Pickett still has a chance to be named the starter before the season begins, the general consensus is that it’ll be Mitchell Trubisky who gets the first crack at leading the Steelers offense.

In these situations, you can always turn it over to a rookie quarterback if the veteran struggles. But it would be real hard for Tomlin to turn to Trubisky after letting Kenny Pickett lead the offense to start the season.

After the last preseason game, Tomlin sounded happy with the production he got out of the quarterback position, but he wasn’t going to let it known where he was leaning just yet.

“I might, but you guys are not gonna have it today,” Tomlin told reporters. “Again, like I told you guys the other week, man, we’re not gonna make knee-jerk reactions or statements following a performance. We’ll go through our proper professional procedure. We’ll evaluate the game. We’ll meet with our front-office people. We’ll have discussions. We’ll talk internally. We’ll talk external possibilities. We’ll go through our normal procedure this time of year. And we’ll disclose it to you at our leisure, to be quite honest with you.”
