Kliff Kingsbury Let Kyler Murray Call Plays in Practice to Teach Him a Lesson

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray finally broke his silence about the reported rift between him and the team heading into the offseason

Kliff Kingsbury is doing things a little differently.

The Arizona Cardinals coach wants quarterback Kyler Murray to understand one thing about calling plays: “This s*** ain’t easy.” Kingsbury gave Murray a chance to call plays in practice and gave an evaluation of Murray as a play caller. As Kingsbury explained, he let Murray call plays for the backup quarterbacks Saturday.

Kingsbury made the decision so Murray could experience what it was like to call plays during a game.

“I just wanted him to know that, hey, this (expletive) ain’t easy,” Kingsbury said with a smile. “Every now and then, he starts shaking his head when I’m calling it in there, I’m like, ‘Alright big dog.’

“Anytime we can can keep him involved. He was coaching them up right until the last second, like while they were trying to throw he was saying stuff to them, so probably won’t be doing that again.”

Kingsbury did say Murray did a good job. But, “I would not want to play for Kyler Murray if I was a quarterback and he was the coach.”

With Kyler Murray still out because of Covid, Colt McCoy is getting all the first-team reps.

After the whole studying fiasco clause in his contract, this feels more about him learning the playbook than anything..
