Bill Belichick clearly still has a soft spot for Matt Patricia.
After all, it was the supposed defensive prowess Patricia showed during his time as DC of New England that landed him the head coaching gig in Detroit. But when things didn’t work out during his tenure there, he went right back to Belichick’s staff.
Now, the Patriots may be giving Patricia a head-scratching new duty: offensive play-caller.

Patricia was recently fired after a failed stint as the #Lions head coach, finishing with a record of 13-29.

Before the Matt Patricia news, Bill Belichick has downplayed the play-caller decision. He spoke on the possibility that he’d handle the duties, but of course didn’t give too much away.
“I’ve called them and I haven’t called them,” Belichick said per NFL.Com. “Other people have called them and haven’t called them. We’ll see.”
It sure seems like the Patriots will have a couple different coaches involved in relaying plays to young QB Mac Jones. But it appears Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia will undoubtedly be more involved in the offense this season.
Should be an interesting dynamic.
