ANAHEIM, CA - JULY 23: Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) hits a solo home run during a MLB game between the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on July 23, 2018 at Angel Stadium of Anaheim in Anaheim, CA. (Photo by Brian Rothmuller/Icon Sportswire)

Los Angeles Angels play-by-play man Matt Vasgersian is clearly not in mid-season form on Opening Day.

With the Angels trailing the Astros 3-1 on Opening day in the late innings, Vasgersian was certain Shohei Ohtani hit a game-tying home run off the bat. However, the ball landed in the glove of Astros right fielder, Kyle Tucker, a few feet shy of the warning track.

Check out the hilarious Matt Vasgersian gaffe below:

Over the past 12 hours, Matt Vasgersian has been trolled all over the web for missing the Shohei Ohtani moment so clearly.

In Matt Vasgersian’s defense, it’s usually safe to assume that any long Shohei Ohtani fly ball is going over the fence.

Last season, Ohtani rode dominant pitching and 47 home runs to a historic, MVP season. And even though he went 0-4 on Opening Day, his pitching didn’t skip a beat from last year.

Something tells me Matt Vasgersian will have plenty of opportunities to get excited about Shohei Ohtani home runs over the course of the season.
