Don’t call it a comeback.
So what constitutes a comeback for a player? Well a lot can factor into this award. Last year’s winner was Joe Burrow, who became the sixth player in the last seven years to overcome injury en route to winning the award, and Burrow was the fourth consecutive quarterback to win this award. It really can vary from injury to inconsistency to possibly being incarcerated.
Oddsmakers expect a shift in this year’s market, with running back Derrick Henry (+400) favored atop a group looking to bounce back in 2022. Here are the current odds via FanDuel Sportsbook.

Derrick Henry already “came back” a year ago after breaking his foot in Week 8, an injury that cost him the second half of the regular season before his miraculous postseason return. The Titans’ running back is 28 years old, which for a running back is getting up there in age, which may explain why no one is sure if he can return to form.
Henry was on a record pace before his absence, rushing for 937 yards and 10 touchdowns while playing on that broken foot for the entirety of that Week 8 win. Had he finished the season, he was on pace to lead the NFL in rushing yards (1,991) and touchdowns (21) for the third consecutive year. Not sure he won’t do more of the same this season.
The other guy to keep an eye on is Baker Mayfield. If he can carry the Panthers to play winning football he’ll certainly be considered. Of course you have Christian McCaffrey coming off another injury, we’ll see if Baker’s presence in Carolina can help him capture the award. Not necessarily an award you want to be considered for, mainly because it means at some point you had a setback.
But an award is an award, even if it is called a Comeback award.
