This is what the NFL preseason is all about.
The preseason action has begun, and for the most part NFL teams have their signal caller all set and ready to go. However there are still a handful of teams who need to figure out who their QB1 will be. The biggest QB battle, or the one that’s garnering the most interest, is Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold. The Carolina Panthers’ first preseason game offered no definitive statements in the quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.
“I have to really watch the tape to see exactly what they did, but I thought they were both in command. They made the right checks, so I was pleased,” head coach Matt Rhule said following Saturday’s 23-21 win over Washington.
Mayfield got the start, but Rhule said the team was still in the evaluation phase of the battle. The coach declined to name a starter heading into the second preseason game.
“No, that was for today, that was just for today,” Rhule said of Mayfield starting. “So we’ll go back and look at this tape. Obviously, Sam got us in the end zone. Baker led us down the field. Looked like both guys played well in terms of production. We’ll go back and see where they are. That was just for today.”

You also have some QB battles going down in Pittsburgh and Seattle.
Round one of Seattle’s quarterback competition between Geno Smith and Drew Lock is in the books following the Seahawks’ preseason opener on Saturday night. By all accounts, the team is scoring it a draw so far.
“As it turned out, for both guys that was a good outing because they had a lot of pressure on them to have to get things done,” head coach Pete Carroll said after the 32-25 defeat to the Steelers, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “We’re coming from behind and drives to go ahead and all that kind of stuff. I’m anxious to see how it looks when we break it down. But those were the kind of options we were looking forward to see how the guys were doing.”
The Steelers signed Mitchell Trubisky as a free agent and then spent their first-round draft pick on Kenny Pickett. Those two, along with seventh-round project quarterback Chris Oladokun, have joined fifth-year Steeler Mason Rudolph on a depth chart that has no clear choice for the top of it.
Coach Mike Tomlin indicated in a recent interview that Trubisky, Pickett and Rudolph are all making a case to be the No. 1 QB.
They’re making it difficult for us. It’s tough to manage three capable guys, but they’re forcing us to do it because they’re making the necessary plays. They’re anticipating, the timing has been good, [and] the accuracy has been good.
The trio may be making it tough on Tomlin, but one of them appears to have the inside track on the starting job.
I’d bet on Trubisky getting the nod.
