Torrey Smith Safety-Shamed on Instagram; Life Jacket Pic Objectively Funny?

Former NFL wide receiver Torrey Smith is enjoying retirement but found his way back into the headlines following a pretty silly back and forth with other former NFL stars on Instagram. The exchange came in response to an IG post that the happy Smith put up to document catching his first fish.

Linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill and former NFL defensive lineman Warren Sapp were among the first to respond to the photo, and not nearly the last to immediately get on Smith’s case about his choice to wear a life vest.

Torrey Smith would later post a classy response explaining his choice to wear the life preserver. Smith would point out that while he does know how to swim and is a world-class athlete, those are not always the only factors in surviving a potential drowning.

As someone new to the water and boating, Torrey Smith is absolutely right in his decision to wear a life jacket. Numerous fans reached out on Instagram thanking him and telling him it would be easier to mandate life jackets for their kids when they can see someone like him wearing one.

Coming just days after the tragic drowning of actress Naya Rivera while swimming in a California lake with her son, it’s odd that Smith would receive this much flak for making a simple safety decision. As Smith would say in his post “Nothing is promised, but I’m going to do my part to make sure I make it home.”

Although, that is a pretty objectively funny picture. What do you think is more important safety or appearance? Let us know on our Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram and check out our YouTube channel for more great Awesemo content.
