Jets’ Jamal Adams Throws Coach Gase Under Bus; GM Confirms Trade Availability

Divorce proceedings are getting ugly between the New York Jets and star safety Jamal Adams. As we’ve covered previously, Adams has been trying to force his way off of the team since the beginning of the offseason after the Jets told him they are not interested in offering him an extension with two years left on his current deal.

Earlier in the offseason, Adams was quoted several times saying that he wants off the team in light of the contract dispute and his perception of unfair treatment. On Friday morning Adams, in a featured interview with the New York Daily News confirmed that he has now been told by Jets General Manager Joe Douglas that the team is now willing to trade him “if the right deal presents itself.”

The paper details a series of ridiculous examples of miscommunication and terrible decision-making by the Jets during the course of their non-negotiation with Jamal Adams. The most egregious insulting step seems to have been Douglas’ telling Adams’ representation that instead of engaging in early negotiations, the team wanted to table things for a year in order to “monitor” Adams’ level of commitment to the organization that would not commit to him. At the time, Adams was understandably upset, saying It was very insulting. You know I bust my ass for that organization every day. I work my ass off. For them to say that to me, I was like ‘Okay… Whoa! That was little bit too far.’”

The star defender would go on to tell the paper that he has bittersweet feelings about the news, saying ““It’s definitely mixed feelings. But at the end of the day, my happiness is more important. I know my worth. I’m going to stand on my beliefs. I’m going to stand on who I am as a person. And I’m not ever going to change who I am for somebody who’s judging me.”

In addition to the contract dispute, Jamal Adams confirmed that his issues with Jets Head Coach Adam Gase were a part of the reason he wants out of the organization as well. Adams told the Daily News that Gase is not “the right leader for this organization to reach the Promised Land.” Adding detail, the safety would then go on to say that the coach “doesn’t have a relationship with everybody in the building.”

This comes in the face of Gase’s recent comment that he and Jamal Adams “has been good since the time I’ve gotten here” and “there’s been a lot of dialogue between us” which Adams countered by saying they haven’t spoken once in 2020.

Adams’ complaint with Gase’s coaching style seems to be with a general abdication of leadership and responsibility, telling the paper: “At the end of the day, he doesn’t address the team. If there’s a problem in the locker room, he lets another coach address the team. If we’re playing shitty and we’re losing, he doesn’t address the entire team as a group at halftime. He’ll walk out of the locker room and let another coach handle it.”

This one seems rapidly headed toward an ending, with both sides now shopping around the league for a suitable deal to get Jamal Adams out of town, but with the many changes in direction we’ve seen in this negotiation so far we’ll probably end up seeing him sign a six-year extension before it’s over.

For his part, Adams seems genuine in his desires, saying he loves Jets fans but that “My happiness is way more important than the rest of this, I can’t deal with all that anymore. It’s draining.” and that ultimately, “I want to win, I want to be with an organization that wants to win and do things the right way.” Which football fans know translates to “not the Jets.”
