Jack Sawyer Ohio State Spring Game Performance Has Buckeye Nation Hyped

Night 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft is less than two weeks away. The FCS schools (well, most of them) are still in the midst of their spring season. Football is indeed in the air! And that’s even with The Rock’s reimagined XFL still a year away from returning.

While FCS regular-season games aren’t typically a part of spring, major college spring games are. Saturday saw The Ohio State Buckeyes hold their annual spring game at Ohio Stadium. Less than 20,000 fans were allowed to attend in person, but you best believe Buckeye Nation was locked in from afar. It seems safe to say that freshman defensive end Jack Sawyer stole the show.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has raved about Sawyer’s progression in offseason practices and workouts. It certainly showed up during the team’s spring game on Saturday.

So, what exactly did we see today? Well, the kid certainly displayed a whole lot of explosiveness, power and brute strength rushing off the end. Four sacks in your freshman spring game ain’t too shabby either.

Not sure who the right tackle is on that particular play but he pretty much got run over.

Sawyer signed with Ohio State as the top-ranked player overall in the 2021 high school class. A native to the Buckeye State himself, Sawyer played both football and basketball at Pickerington North High School. He excelled defensively in each of his two seasons at the varsity level, finishing his career with 99 tackles, 34 tackles for loss and 19.5 sacks.

On top of those numbers, Sawyer was about as sound a two-way player as you’ll find. Operating as Pickerington North’s quarterback during his junior season, he threw for 1086 yards and 9 touchdowns in the 2019-20 season. He also racked up 386 yards and 6 scores in the rushing department.

Now, Sawyer is now the latest among a list of stud edge rushers in Columbus. The Bosa brothers, Joey and Nick, along with Chase Young are all tearing it up in the NFL these days. Sawyer is a long way from that and is yet to even play in his first REAL college game. Even so, he appears to already have captured the hearts of the Brutus faithful…and analysts too!

Call them a bunch of overreactions if you want, but Sawyer’s spring game performance today was one for the ages. The rest of the Big Ten and Nick Saban have officially been put on notice.
