Henry Ruggs Was Seeking Golf Tips From Derek Carr Right Before The Deadly Car Crash

When Derek Carr was asked about the Henry Ruggs car crash that resulted in a young woman’s death, the quarterback was clearly distraught.

“My emotions have been on a roller coaster, so to speak, this year. My heart goes out so much … to the family, to all the families involved. No one ever wants to see this, whether it’s a football player or not, you never want to see something like this happen. It broke my wife and I’s heart, honestly. We talked about it a little bit, but I can only talk about it so much.

“But at the same time, whether it’s fair or not, I have to compartmentalize, and I have a job to do. These are two totally different situations (also referring to the Jon Gruden resignation). Some similar emotions, some very different emotions. But the message has to stay the same. Honestly I don’t want it to right now, if I’m selfish. … I want to say a lot of different things, but we have a game this week, and I’ve got a job to do. And so do the guys in that locker room. I don’t know the right way to handle it, but I’m doing my best.”

When elaborating on his comments, Derek Carr was asked about his last interaction with Henry Ruggs. He revealed that Ruggs actually texted him and Hunter Renfrow just a few hours before the time of the terrible crash to ask for tips on his golf game.

“He literally texted me at midnight a golf swing, hit me and Hunter [Renfrow], ‘How’s my swing look? You guys need to help me’ And just seeing that and then getting the news when we woke up, I just … I don’t even know how I’m supposed to handle that,” Carr said.

Derek Carr and the Raiders will now have to somehow focus their attention to a matchup with the New York Giants this Sunday.

Henry Ruggs has been released by the team – as he’s currently being charged with a DUI leading to death.
