Carson Wentz To The 49ers Rumor Hits The Web

Jalen Hurts has played one game as the starting quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles, and Philly fans are already asking Carson Wentz to pack his bags. As trade speculation surrounds Wentz, many are speculating where the disgruntled quarterback may end up.

Any team that takes on Wentz would be taking a chance, and taking on a lot of money. However, the reward would be tremendous is Wentz can ever reach his potential. Today, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell talked about the financial implications of a Wentz trade.

“Whichever team that traded for Wentz would be acquiring a new quarterback on a four-year, $98.4 million contract,” Barnwell writes. “While that isn’t exorbitant money, it would be picking up those $40.4 million in guarantees and basically be locked in to paying Wentz $47.4 million over the next two seasons.”

Barnwell then tied Carson Wentz to the San Francisco 49ers, and wrote about how their general manager John Lynch would have to navigate the potential deal.

“If the Niners want to make a change at quarterback, though, they have the flexibility to create significant short-term cap space by cutting Jimmy Garoppolo. Releasing the oft-injured Garoppolo would free up $23.6 million in cap space in 2021, a close match for the $25.4 million cap figure Wentz would occupy after being traded,” Barnwell wrote.
