Baker Mayfield Trending Following The News On Browns’ Pursuit Of Deshaun Watson

Even though it appeared the Browns were set on giving Baker Mayfield one last chance to prove he was the franchise quarterback, reports begin to surface last week that the team was actively seeking a trade to acquire Deshaun Watson.

But now that the dust has settled, it looks like Watson is only interested in being moved to three teams at this time: the Falcons, Saints and Panthers.

With this being the case, it was announced on Thursday morning that the Browns were officially taking their name out of the Deshaun Watson sweepstakes — with the full intention of running it back with Baker Mayfield.

This is particularly awkward because Baker Mayfield took to social media on Wednesday to send a long “thank you” post to the city of Cleveland with his future being uncertain.

“With many uncertainties, here is where my head and heart is. The past 4 years have been nothing short of truly life changing since I heard my name called in the draft to go to Cleveland. This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me. We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs,” mayfield wrote in part of his long post.

Shortly after it was announced that the Browns were backing off their Deshaun Watson pursuit, Baker Mayfield was trending all over the web.

Perhaps an apology from the Browns front office to Baker Mayfield is in order.

After all, the reports coming out of Cleveland just yesterday were that the team was looking for more maturity out of their quarterback position. And many started to believe the former first overall pick in the draft was already plotting out where he wanted to play next.

I’d expect Baker Mayfield to remain the QB in Cleveland for the last year of his contract. But don’t be surprised if he’s not a part of the team’s long term plans at this point.
