Baker Mayfield has been a longtime advocate of Julius Jones – an Oklahoma man who was convicted of murder and sentenced to execution.
As Jones is set to be executed in Oklahoma tomorrow, Mayfield was asked about his thoughts on the matter. It was clearly not easy for the Browns quarterback to speak on the issue he has devoted a ton of time to.

“It’s not something that’s easy to talk about. Been trying to get the facts stated and the truth to be told for awhile now. Tried and tried. It’s a shame that its gotten this far, we’re 24 hours away … Hopefully God can intervene and handle it correctly and do the things he needs to do,” he said.

Baker Mayfield isn’t the only athlete advocating for Julius Jones. Russell Westbrook, Buddy Hield and Blake Griffin have also put in effort to try to save Jones’ life.

“As God is my witness, I was not involved in any way in the crimes that led to Howell being shot and killed. I have spent the past 20 years on death row for a crime I did not commit, did not witness and was not at,” Julius Jones said in his clemency report.
Jones was convicted of the 1999 murder of Paul Howell, who was shot in the driveway of his parents home. He remains adamant that he was set up by an acquaintance who planted the gun in his home following the murder.
Baker Mayfield and the other athletes who teamed up to advocate for Julius Jones will now put their faith in Oklahoma Gov. Kevin State to put a halt on the execution.
