Alex Ovechkin Speaks On His Mindset Heading Into Free Agency

There has been a lot of speculation around Alex Ovechkin’s future as he faces unrestricted free agency this summer.

The 35-year-old Ovechkin is still one of the top goal-scorers in the NHL, but he has showed some interest in going back to Russia to retire from professional hockey. While that might be his plan sometime down the road, it sure sounds like Ovi is set on getting something done with the Capitals this offseason.

Ovechkin is currently negotiating on his own with the Capitals’ brass.

“I’m confident; we still have time,” Ovechkin said in his year-end media availability on Tuesday via EPN. “Obviously, I want to finish my career here. I’m pretty sure we will do something soon.”

When Ovechkin signed his (then record breaking) 13-year, $124 million contract early in his career, he was also acting without an agent. And he even had members of his family there for final contract talks.

Alex Ovechkin has made the D.C. area home, and has many projects throughout the city. Earlier in the month, Ovi and his wife, Nastya, even became investors in the NWSL’s Washington Spirit.

“It was also important for me to support the D.C. community,” Ovechkin told ESPN. “I support everybody in this town. Me and my wife love to go watch a soccer game, watch football and baseball. We all win. If I have this opportunity, I think it’s very important for me to do it, because it also shows we care.”

It sure sounds like Alex Ovechkin has no plans to leave Washington D.C. any time soon, and that should be music to the ears of Capitals fans everywhere.
