Joe Buck Shares Funny Exchange He Had With Tony Romo Following Reported $75 million ESPN Deal

Joe Buck is doing pretty well for himself, thanks to Tony Romo?

The former Fox Broadcaster is one of the few who have benefitted greatly off the recent rise of broadcaster salaries, and it sounds like he knows who to thank. Joe Buck left Fox for the Mothership for a reported $75 million over five years, with partner Troy Aikman also leaving Fox in the rear view mirror. Troy is reportedly getting $90 million over five years. Those deals come on the heels of Tony Romo’s $17 million extension with CBS back in 2020, a contract that essentially reset the market for NFL broadcaster salaries.

In an appearance on “The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast” this week, Buck shared a funny exchange he had with the former Dallas Cowboys QB at the annual American Century Championship celebrity pro-am tournament in July.

“All I know is I saw Romo at the Tahoe golf tournament. I’m eating dinner with the guy that I brought there to caddie,” Buck said. “[Romo] walks by and all he says is, ‘you’re welcome,’ and then he kept walking.”

Like anything else, there has to be a first, and Tony Romo’s deal with CBS definitely lead to a cascade of cash being thrown at the Sports World’s top broadcasters. If Romo didn’t push for and get the contract he received from CBS who knows if Buck and Aikman would even be at ESPN right now.

If anyone should be thanking Tony Romo, it should be Tom Brady. Without Tony there’s zero chance Tom would have landed his $200 million overall deal.
