Another Team Drops Out Of The Running For Baker Mayfield

Another team with a clear need at quarterback has evidently passed on Baker Mayfield.

After the Falcons traded Matt Ryan to the Colts and added Marcus Mariota to be their QB1, the optics made it seem that the only remaining teams who might take a chance on a Mayfield trade was the Panthers and Seahawks.

But according to a report, the Panthers have no interest in Baker Mayfield, and he wouldn’t even want to play for them if the opportunity arose.

Per Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network, Baker Mayfield and the Panthers have a “mutual disinterest”.

“Sources: Baker Mayfield, Panthers have mutual disinterest in working together, won’t be trade destination. What’s next for former top overall pick?” Wilson tweeted.

So that would leave the Seahawks as the most likely option for Baker Mayfield to start games for next season, right?

Well, Seattle acquired Drew Lock from the Broncos in their blockbuster trade of Russell Wilson. And with both Lock and Mayfield having a similar skill set, it’s a little hard to imagine Pete Carroll would be all too thrilled to bring the Browns QB into the fold.

The Seahawks coach has maintained that he believes his team can win with Lock under center, as well.

“If he plays like he did early on, I think we’ve got a shot,’’ Carroll said of the team’s Super Bowl chances with Lock. “You go back to his first year when he was balling as a rookie, when he was 4-1, his third-down numbers were terrific. Taking care of the football really well.
We think he’s still that guy and so we’ll see.’’

With all these factors, it appears that Baker Mayfield is in limbo. Earlier reports indicated that the Steelers would exercise the possibility of bringing him in if he were released. But given that they already signed Mitchell Trubisky, and remain “in” on draft prospect Malik Willis, that seems unlikely, as well.

As this point, Mayfield’s best option might be to wait it out until teams suffer injuries at the quarterback position.
