Chicago Cubs Being Linked To Top Free Agent Shortstop

While the Chicago Cubs remain in their rebuild after going full-sell at last year’s Trade Deadline, perhaps they’re considering some big moves this offseason.

The Cubs have been especially been linked to some of the top shortstops who are currently in their contract year. And now, one is emerging as a top target for Chicago: Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts.

Per Audacy:

“Bob Nightengale of USA Today says of the Cubs that “several executives are predicting that they end up with Xander Bogaerts.” Nightengale points out that Cubs’ president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer was a high-ranking member of the Boston Red Sox front office when Bogaerts was initially signed as an international free agent in 2009.”

Xander Bogaerts is in the midst of another stellar season with Boston.

So far, he’s slashing .318/.391/.456 with six home runs and 31 RBIs. Obviously, he’ll be highly-coveted in free agency, and the Red Sox will undoubtedly be looking to keep him around.

But after the Cubs let Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez walk, they should have some money to spend. And perhaps they’ll finally reward their uneasy fan base by making a push at Xander Bogaerts.
